Would you leave Melbourne?

So, I've been inspired by [personal profile] tangent_woman to ask - would you leave Melbourne to live in country Victoria? And if so, where? And why?

After driving down the Great Ocean Road to Johanna Beach, I have to say I fell in love with Joanna and the lovely little seaside towns between there and Melbourne. Living on the coast really appeals to this island girl, but, I suspect it would be expensive.

Would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations on places to visit or live in country Vic. :)

If transport weren't an issue (don't drive, never will have that option) then I'd certainly consider somewhere down on the coast. My sister lived in Mt Martha for a while and it was lovely.

Or one of the little towns in the Yarra.

Heck, it's really just the transport thing that keeps me in the city...

I would far prefer to live outside suburban Melbourne. I'm stuck in St Kilda at the moment (office of housing property) but I grew up mostly in Warrandyte when it was an interface suburb (think 1980s - lived there from 1980 to 1989 more or less) and full of market gardens and horse adjistments and alternative/artsy people in general.

I'm in the midst of applying to move to the just-east-of-Box-Hill area (nunawadding/Mitcham/etc.) at the moment but with public housing and needing wheelchair access it could be years until it happens. I'm severely disabled and have family in Balwyn and Croydon and my doctor is in Donvale and I need all three and also paid carers to look after me, so I can't go live in the back of beyond unfortunately. If I could, I very probably would.

Cheers,
